Personal Training For Seniors

If you are over 60 and looking for a personal trainer to help improve your physical health, strength, cognitive function and mental health then you have come to the right place. I have been working with older populations for over 10 years now and have helped hundreds improve their health and fitness. I specialise in post op recovery,  injury rehabilitation and strength training for seniors.

Why should seniors hire a personal trainer?

Let’s look at the main reasons the senior generation should seek help from a personal trainer:

  • Improve Health Conditions: Seniors are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. They may also have mobility, balance problems, high blood pressure or difficulty walking.
  • Maintain independence: As you get older it’s even more important to stay active. Not doing any exercise or keeping active can have a detrimental effect on your health. You may lose your ability to do certain tasks and lose motivation. This is usually due to a lack of physical activity. Ultimately it can affect your independence.
  • Improve Mental Health: Depression can also impact older populations. Physical exercise will help to improve your mood and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
  • Maintain muscle and strength: Its very difficult to maintain muscle and strength as you age so it’s crucial to preserve as much of that as possible otherwise you may lose independence earlier and you can suffer from joint pain and back pain. Strength training will also help to increase bone density, improve balance, improve aerobic fitness, increase confidence, weight loss and improve mobility.
  • Improve Mobility: Movement becomes more limited as you age so maintaining mobility within muscles and joints is crucial. Stretching regularly will help to improve this.

What are the best types of exercise for seniors?

Combining low impact aerobic activity and muscle strengthening exercises are the best types of exercises for Seniors. Pilates based exercises are very good for reducing back pain, improving flexibility and maintaining core strength. Exercises like squats and push ups are going to help maintain muscle and strength.

It’s important to do things you enjoy so when I put together an exercise program for my older clients its always varied, enjoyable and tailored to their specific needs.

Tailored personal training plans for seniors

Each plan is tailored to your specific needs. To make sure you get the best results.

  • I start with an assessment of your health and fitness and if necessary, I will require consent from a medical professional before we begin.
  • During the session we will start with light aerobic exercise to make sure you are warmed up properly. I will assess you to see if you have any discomfort, such as knee pain, hip pain or lower back pain. I will then go through functional movements to see how much mobility you have and if you are able to perform exercises correctly.
  • Furthermore, we will go through strength tests and cardiovascular tests.

Setting realistic personal training targets and goals for seniors

We all need to push ourselves and this is just as important for the older generation. You must learn to challenge yourself. I will help you set realistic targets and goals and help you progress towards them. All my programs are completely different and are tailored for you, around your lifestyle.
